New Safety Measures in Cancun Enhance Security for Tourists
Despite recent concerns about crime in Cancun, many visitors report feeling safe in this popular destination. Nonetheless, local authorities continue to strengthen safety efforts to protect the millions of tourists who flock to Cancun each year. Here are seven new safety measures designed to improve security across the city.
1. Installation of Security Cameras and C5 Integration
Cancun has installed hundreds of surveillance cameras throughout the city, linking them to Quintana Roo’s C5 Security Complex. According to Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, “70 new Intelligent Monitoring Points (PMI) are now in place, each with four cameras connected to the Quintana Roo Security Complex (C5), providing enhanced citywide visibility.” These cameras not only serve as a deterrent to crime but also assist authorities in locating and apprehending suspects.
2. Technology Upgrades
Keeping technology up-to-date is crucial for security. The C2 Control and Command Center, which manages Cancun’s video surveillance system, recently received state-of-the-art equipment. With 70 monitoring points across the city, each equipped with four cameras, officials are boosting security, especially in high-traffic tourist areas.
3. Drone Surveillance
Cancun has also begun deploying drones to increase safety for both tourists and residents. These advanced drones, equipped with night vision, can stay airborne for around 40 minutes, assisting in tracking suspects and locating crime victims. This technology allows authorities to respond quickly and effectively.
4. Enhanced Police Training
To ensure the effectiveness of its police force, Cancun is investing in additional training. Officers are receiving specialized instruction from the C2’s Analysis and Police Intelligence, and Intelligence and Command departments. The mayor’s goal is to build the “best police force in Cancun’s history,” reinforcing the city’s commitment to safety.
5. Increased Patrolling in Tourist Areas
As part of an expanded patrolling initiative, Cancun has deployed additional security personnel, particularly in high-tourist areas like the Hotel Zone. Sixty members from the Navy and the Tourist Police Department are now stationed every mile and a half along this bustling area to deter criminal activity, including drug sales and extortion.
These efforts underline Cancun’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment for its visitors. If you’re planning a trip, rest assured that the city is prioritizing your security at every turn.
